{"id":2308,"date":"2021-03-17T15:56:37","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T15:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.diamondleague.com\/best-of-monster-throws\/"},"modified":"2021-03-17T15:56:37","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T15:56:37","slug":"best-of-monster-throws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.diamondleague.com\/best-of-monster-throws\/","title":{"rendered":"Best Of&#8230;Monster Throws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is almost two months until the 2021 Wanda Diamond League is scheduled to begin in Rabat, and Morocco may be bracing itself to witness some monster throws on May 23.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In past years, the Diamond League season opener has often seen records tumble in the throwing events, from Thomas R\u00f6hler&#8217;s javelin Diamond League record in 2017 to Daniel Stahl&#8217;s discus DLR two years later.<\/p>\n<p>In anticipation of more jaw-dropping early-season&nbsp;lobs in the discus, javelin and shot put, we look back at some throwing royalty from the last decade of the Diamond League.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas R\u00f6hler &#8211; Javelin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Diamond League champion in 2014, German javelin ace R\u00f6hler is also responsible for one of the most memorable throws in the series&#8217; history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the season opener in Doha in 2017, R\u00f6hler launched what was then a Diamond League record of 93.90, missing the TV cameraman at the other end of the field only by a matter of feet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"lazyload smush-lazyload-video smush-lazyload-youtube\" style=\"--smush-video-aspect-ratio: 661\/372\" data-bg-image=\"url(https:\/\/www.diamondleague.com\/wp-admin\/admin-ajax.php?action=smush_video_thumbnail&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fembed%2Fpl3_9FCA8_w&#038;video_width=661&#038;video_height=372)\" ><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; Discus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another athlete to have broken a Diamond League record in Doha was Swedish discus star Daniel St\u00e5hl, who set a new series best of 70.56m in Doha in 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Though his record was <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WmPE15qycus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broken later that season by Jamaican rival Fedrick Dacres<\/a>, St\u00e5hl went on to claim his first ever Diamond Trophy at the end of the year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"lazyload smush-lazyload-video smush-lazyload-youtube\" style=\"--smush-video-aspect-ratio: 661\/372\" data-bg-image=\"url(https:\/\/www.diamondleague.com\/wp-admin\/admin-ajax.php?action=smush_video_thumbnail&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fembed%2F9fPbmwKj0_g&#038;video_width=661&#038;video_height=372)\" ><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; Discus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One woman with no shortage of Diamond Trophies is Sandra Perkovic, who has six titles to her name in the women&#8217;s discus, making her the joint most successful female athlete in Diamond League history alongside Caterine Ibarg\u00fcen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some of her most memorable marks in the series include a 70.88 monster in Shanghai in 2016 and an even bigger 71.38 in Doha two years later.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"lazyload smush-lazyload-video smush-lazyload-youtube\" style=\"--smush-video-aspect-ratio: 661\/372\" data-bg-image=\"url(https:\/\/www.diamondleague.com\/wp-admin\/admin-ajax.php?action=smush_video_thumbnail&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fembed%2FF3dbQUBnKRA&#038;video_width=661&#038;video_height=372)\" ><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; Shot Put<\/b><\/p>\n<p>New Zealander Tom Walsh may be a good-natured soul away from the ring, but he always means business in competition, and is now the most successful male shot putter in Diamond League history with three Diamond Trophies to his name.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Walsh won the title in 2016, 2018 and 2019, and has often frustrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pnvun1DJMmg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US rival Ryan Crouser<\/a> in the American&#8217;s quest to win a first career Diamond Trophy.
