{"id":2973,"date":"2023-05-22T09:50:50","date_gmt":"2023-05-22T09:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.diamondleague.com\/african-distance-stars-assemble-in-monaco\/"},"modified":"2023-05-22T09:50:50","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T09:50:50","slug":"african-distance-stars-assemble-in-monaco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.diamondleague.com\/african-distance-stars-assemble-in-monaco\/","title":{"rendered":"African distance stars assemble in Monaco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Africa&#8217;s finest middle and long distance stars are set to descend on the Cote d&#8217;Azur on July 21st for the ninth Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season at Herculis EBS Monaco.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two-time Olympic and world champion Faith Kipyegon will be the headline star in the women&#8217;s 1500m, as she bids for a fourth career Diamond Trophy in 2023. The Kenyan legend claimed her third Wanda Diamond League title in 2023, and will be out to emulate the form which saw her take a stunning win over Dutch rival Sifan Hassan in Monaco last year.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Diamond League champion Emmanuel Korir will also be flying the flag for Kenya in Monaco, as he too eyes a fourth title this summer in the men&#8217;s 800m. Korir has not won in Monaco since his first ever Diamond League victory back in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere Uganda&#8217;s Olympic bronze medallist Jacob Kiplimo will take on 2021 Wanda Diamond League champion Berihu Aregawi in the men&#8217;s 5000m. Ethiopia&#8217;s Aregawi lost his title in 2022, but managed to set a a meeting record of 12:50.05 in Eugene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Wanda Diamond League Stockholm is the seventh leg of athletics&#8217; premier one-day meeting series.
